Visualizing Bodies of Information :: Fall 2016

This semester, we drew with data. We came to understand how data is commonly organized using spreadsheets, CSV, TSV, XML and JSON files. We used the Processing programming environment to explore hierarchical, time based, relational and spatial visualizations of various kinds of exchanges, consumptions, and connectivities.
While data may appear to convey facts, the ways in which it is commonly conceived in the 21st-century are historically and culturally specific. Understanding this and the implications of this has been the conceptual work of the class. We find ourselves considering what the limits of data are.

Global DDOS Attacks

DDOS stands for "distributed denial of service," and is a type of info war where hackers try to take down a server through repeated requests, usually through some kind of automated process such as a low orbit ion cannon. This visualization shows what areas are most prone to DDOS attacks between 9/10-9/20/2016.

Travel Time and Red Signals in September

This graphic shows the relationship between travel duration and numbers of red signals I run into in September 2016. The red lines indicate the duration of the trip in a day; points of the zigzag lines refer to the numbers of the signals; length of the zigzag lines represent frequency. The smoother a line appears the better travel experience I had on that day.
